Class Visit to the Museum

Objective

The objective of the programme is:

  • to encourage inquiry and heighten the students’ understanding and appreciation of our common World History
  • to help the students acquire knowledge of different cultures, understand the similarities and differences between cultures and value them
  • to facilitate the study of subjects taught in schools in the framework of the national curriculum (History, Languages, Religion)
  • to assist the students in acquiring the motivation and skills required for lifelong learning
  • to give the students the opportunity to try themselves in a possible profession of historian, curator, museum guide

AGE GROUP 1

Grades: 1-5       Age: 6-11

Time: 1 hour

Cost: 35€ + 3€ per child,

2 accompanying Adults free

Theme

Overview Order of Malta, Templars. Orders of the Garter, Golden Fleece, Bath, Double Dragon, White Rose (emphasis on different sciences).

  • Introduction to orders through the oldest order of Knighthood – the Order of Malta. Looking at the insignia of the oldest and most memorable orders, such as the Order of the Garter and the Bath
  • Roleplaying at the museum (the children are divided into langues similar to the division in the Order of Malta and participate in finding the answers to a quiz)
  • Quest
  • Knighting ceremony (optional) students will be knighted and receive certificates from the museum
  • The children have the opportunity to send a postcard to their school from the museum (optional, included in the price)
  • At home (in class) – found your own order (name, rules, design a decoration for your order)
  • Participate in the Museum Guide for an Hour project

Time: 1 hour

  • 5 minute optional preparation at school or at home (fill in the questionnaire, can also be done at the museum)
  • Visit to the Museum
  • Optional participation in the Guide for an Hour programme

Theme

All themes include an introduction to the subject of orders and their decorations, starting with a simple questionnaire that can be filled in at school prior to the visit, or at the museum (no research into the subject is required from the students)

Depending on the subject the students are studying, the teachers can request a focus on the following themes:

  • Crusades and the birth of orders of Knighthood
  • Estonian Award System
  • History of Britain through the Royal Orders of Knighthood
  • Orders of Spain and Portugal
  • Napoleon and the Order of the Legion of Honour
  • History of the Northern Region through the Orders of Knighthood (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Russian Empire and Sweden)
  • History of Germany through the Orders of Knighthood
  • The role of Saints and Christian lore in the Orders of Knighthood, Papal Orders
  • Orders and decorations in East Asia
    • After the tour the students are asked to revisit their answers to the questionnaire and to reflect on how the visit to the museum has/or hasn’t changed their views on the subject of orders and decorations, what all countries have in common and what are the differences.
